Why EPC Buyers Choose NSW Valve

A gate valve supplier is easy to find. A qualified high-pressure gate valve factory is not. The difference is traceability, testing capability, hardfacing control, and the ability to prove that every pressure-containing part performs under real severe-service conditions.

NSW Valve supports EPC contractors, plant operators, and procurement engineers with:

  • ✔ Forged body manufacturing for high-pressure classes, reducing porosity and structural risk compared with standard castings.
  • ✔ In-house PMI, NDT, and pressure testing before shipment.
  • ✔ Stellite hardfacing control on wedge and seat surfaces for erosion and galling resistance.
  • ✔ Pressure sealed bonnet expertise for Class 900, 1500, 2500, and API wellhead-level isolation.
  • ✔ Full documentation packages for project audits: MTRs, test reports, NDT records, and compliance certificates.

What Defines a High-Pressure Gate Valve?

A high-pressure gate valve is engineered for bidirectional, zero-leakage isolation in demanding piping systems. Depending on pressure and temperature, the design ranges from a versatile Class 150 valve for utility lines to a severe-service Class 2500 unit for supercritical steam, high-pressure gas injection, and offshore production.

At high pressure classes, bolted bonnet designs often become impractical. Critical installations therefore use a Pressure Sealed Bonnet design, where internal line pressure is converted into sealing force.

Wedge Architecture & Selection

When sourcing from a gate valve factory, selecting the correct wedge geometry is critical for long-term performance.

[Suggested image: Three types of gate valve wedges — flexible wedge, parallel slide gate, solid wedge]
Alt: Gate valve wedge types comparison — flexible, parallel slide, solid wedge

1. Flexible Wedge — API 600 / ASME B16.34

The flexible wedge has a perimeter groove or cut-out that allows the two seating faces to flex independently.

Best for: High-temperature steam and severe process lines subject to thermal expansion and piping loads.

Advantage: Reduces thermal binding, where temperature changes can lock a closed wedge into the body seats.

2. Parallel Slide Gate Valve

Two independent parallel discs are pushed against parallel body seats by springs and line pressure.

Best for: Supercritical steam, high-pressure boiler feed water, and power generation mains.

Advantage: Eliminates mechanical wedging forces, reducing operating torque and stem wear.

3. Solid Wedge

A rigid, single-piece precision-machined forged wedge.

Best for: General liquid and gas pipelines with minimal thermal cycling.

Advantage: Maximum structural stability with no internal moving parts.

Material & Manufacturing Standards

An experienced high-pressure valve manufacturer must adhere to global design, material, and testing standards.

Design & Testing Standards

  • API 600 / API 602: Steel gate valves — flanged and butt-welding ends / compact forged gate valves.
  • ASME B16.34: Valves — flanged, threaded, and welding end pressure-temperature ratings.
  • API 6D: Pipeline specification for pressure isolation valves.
  • API 598: Valve inspection and testing.
  • ISO 15848-1 / API 622: Fugitive emission testing and packing qualification.
  • NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156: Sour service resistance where required.

Factory Quality Control: What We Actually Check

[Suggested image: API 598 high-pressure hydrostatic test on Class 2500 gate valve]
Alt: API 598 high pressure hydrostatic test bench at NSW Valve factory

A supplier can forward a catalogue. A qualified factory must prove process control. At NSW Valve, the following checks are performed before shipment:

1. Material Traceability & PMI Testing

Every forged body is accompanied by EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Reports and undergoes Positive Material Identification to verify alloy composition. For alloy steel and duplex valves, PMI is performed on the finished pressure-containing parts, not only on incoming bar stock.

[Suggested image: PMI test on forged A182 F22 gate valve body]
Alt: PMI positive material identification on forged F22 gate valve body

2. Precision Surface Finish

Stem surfaces are ground and burnished to Ra ≤ 0.2–0.4 µm. This improves live-loaded gland packing performance and supports fugitive emission compliance under ISO 15848-1 and API 622.

3. Hardfacing Quality

Seat rings and wedge faces receive Stellite No. 6 overlays. After welding, liquid penetrant testing is performed to confirm zero micro-porosity.

[Suggested image: Stellite hardfacing on gate valve wedge and seat ring before PT inspection]
Alt: Stellite No. 6 hardfacing overlay on gate valve wedge and seat ring

4. Pressure Testing Facilities

The factory operates dedicated high-pressure hydrostatic test benches capable of testing up to 1.5× design pressure. This is critical for Class 2500 valves. High-pressure pneumatic/nitrogen shell and seat tests are also performed per API 598 when specified.

5. Non-Destructive Testing

Pressure-containing welds and forgings are inspected using RT, UT, MT, or PT as required by the purchase specification. NDT reports are included in the final documentation package.

How to Evaluate a Gate Valve Factory

When conducting supplier audits or requesting quotations, evaluate technical capability — not only price.

Essential Factory Verification Criteria

  1. Material traceability and PMI: Every forged body must have EN 10204 3.1 MTRs and PMI verification.
  2. Machining and surface finish: Stem surfaces should be Ra ≤ 0.2–0.4 µm.
  3. Hardfacing control: Stellite overlays must be PT-tested after welding.
  4. Pressure testing: Hydrostatic test benches must reach 1.5× design pressure, with API 598 nitrogen testing available.
  5. NDT capability: RT, UT, MT, and PT must be available for pressure-containing parts.
  6. Documentation: MTRs, test certificates, NDT reports, and COC must be issued with the shipment.
  7. Certification scope: Verify that API 600, API 6D, ISO 15848-1, and CE/PED certificates cover the actual valve type and pressure class you are buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary difference between a Class 150 and a Class 2500 gate valve?

A Class 150 gate valve is designed for lower-pressure applications (up to ~19–20 bar) and typically uses a bolted bonnet with thinner wall sections. A Class 2500 valve is engineered for severe pressures above 420 bar, featuring thick forged walls, heavy butt-weld or RTJ ends, and usually a pressure sealed bonnet design to prevent bonnet joint leakage.

Why is a Pressure Sealed Bonnet preferred over a Bolted Bonnet for high pressures?

Bolted bonnets rely on stud bolt tension to compress a gasket. At extreme pressure levels, the required bolt diameter and tightening torque become impractical. A pressure sealed bonnet uses system line pressure to push the bonnet upward against a metallic or flexible gasket, so the seal becomes tighter as line pressure increases.

What documentation should a qualified manufacturer provide?

A qualified manufacturer should provide EN 10204 3.1 Material Test Reports, API 598 pressure test certificates, NDE/NDT inspection reports, painting/coating verification, and a Certificate of Compliance. For sour service, NACE MR0175 compliance documentation should also be included.

Can NSW Valve supply NACE MR0175 gate valves for sour service?

Yes. We can supply gate valves in A105, F22, F316, Duplex F51/F53, and other materials with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance when specified. Please include H₂S partial pressure, temperature, and chloride level in your inquiry.

Do you provide API 598 pressure test certificates?

Yes. API 598 shell and seat test certificates are issued for applicable valves. High-pressure nitrogen testing can also be performed when required.
